Mini-water yard

Mini-water yard/ Clean water towersA well, often called a borehole in South Sudan, is a vertical excavation in the ground created by boring or drilling a hole, from 4.5 inches up to 8 inches in diameter to access groundwater from an underlying aquifer. The water from the aquifer is typically lifted to the surface by attaching a hand pump to the well. However, a well with an extremely high water yield can be converted to what is called a mini-water yard. The typical view, looking at a mini-water yard, is that of a tower with several water tanks on top. Instead of using the customary hand pump on a well, with a mini-water yard, water is pumped directly from the well into the elevated reservoir tanks.

In close proximity to the mini-water yard will be a tap stand.  Water flows through pipes from the elevated retention reservoirs to the tap stand, where the community collects its water.  Many tap stands will have several faucets for simultaneous use by community members. The water pressure flowing into these taps from the holding tanks is high, so a water container can be filled very quickly as compared to the amount of time required to fill a container using the typical hand pump method.

IAS only constructs solar-powered mini-water yards in South Sudan. The electricity generated through these solar panels is what powers the pumping mechanism in order to get the water from the well up and into the holding tanks.  Gravity brings the water down from the holding tanks to the taps. A mini-water yard can serve a community of 2,000 people with safe drinking water (15 liters/per person/per day).

With the construction of a mini-water yard, community training in hygiene and sanitation is also provided, as well as the establishment of a community well committee to protect and maintain the village’s new asset.
